Senate Standing Committee on Professional Ethics & Academic Freedom
Committee Description/Mission
The Committee on Professional Ethics and Academic Freedom has responsibility for the study, evaluation, and interpretation of all administrative policies, contractual provisions, Faculty Code, Faculty Handbook, and Faculty Organization Plan amendments, resolutions proposed to the Faculty Senate or the Faculty Assembly and other matters potentially affecting standards of professional conduct and academic freedom. Consistent with the jurisdiction of the Faculty Senate, the Committee's jurisdiction only reaches matters having direct or potential University-wide effect. The Committee's responsibilities can be more specifically identified as follows:
- To consult with the Faculty Assembly, the Faculty Senate, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, the President of the University, other University administrators, and the Board of Trustees, as requested, on matters affecting standards of professional conduct and academic freedom.
- To propose or review proposed Faculty Senate resolutions and/or amendments to the Faculty Code, Faculty Handbook, and Faculty Organization Plan as necessary to assure high standards of professional conduct and academic freedom.
- To propose itself, or to receive from individual faculty members, recommendations for study or action on matters relating to University administrative practice and policy or other matters directly affecting standards of professional conduct and academic freedom.
